Humans of Mettamade is a recurring project that highlights individuals in the Hamilton community who are actively engaged in the body positivity + body peace space.
Cynthia Boyde is a recent grad from Mohawk College’s public relations program, currently freelancing and looking for her next big opportunity. As a YouTuber, blogger, and active Instagrammer, she is an passionate and vocal advocate for body positivity in Hamilton and beyond.
Q: Why Mettamade?
[Mettamade is] a brand that [is] actually putting in work to be inclusive, to ask questions, and not be afraid to get messy or sticky with the work of inclusion. Plus, (co-founder) Morgan is frickin' amazing.
Q: Tell us about your body positivity journey.
I had an eating disorder for more than 10 years, on and off since I was about 10. I was struggling to get to a healthy place, and through that journey I made a lot of mistakes, [such as] overexercising and battling a clean-eating addiction. When I moved to Hamilton, I was trying Keto at the time. I was miserable.
I met a lot of amazing body-positive people at Mohawk College while I was doing my journalism diploma — people who loved food and enjoyed the love of food. I had been looking at body positivity online. It made sense to me – I was coming to a place where I accepted that my eating was disordered and I was ready to do the work to heal my body.
Now, [my focus has shifted to] fat liberation and body liberation.
Q: How do you incorporate body positivity in your life?
I'm mindful about not engaging in diet talk, or when I notice people are moving/exercising for the wrong reasons, I won't engage with that either. I've curated my social media so that it's all body- and fat-positive people on there. I surround myself with amazing people. It's really the support system that helps make the [body liberation] movement [possible].
Q: Tell us about your capsule wardrobe
I love to dance... EVERYWHERE. So, it has to move. When the wind hits you, you want to feel a little bit like Beyoncé, because something moves on your body. I love to be able to dance and move and feel comfortable, but still look elevated.
Q: What's one piece of advice you can give others on their body peace journey?
One: Change the people you surround yourself with, or at least be aware of them.
Two: You don't get happy with your body overnight, and you aren't ALWAYS going to be happy — it's about acceptance and gratitude, and celebrating the milestones.
